The internship has given me a real appreciation of how rewarding it can be to work with Indigenous people to seek the recognition of their land rights and it has given me some insight into what it is like to seek to achieve social justice outcomes in the capacity of a legal practitioner.

It has been an absolute privilege to have worked with Susan. I have learnt a lot in my time in chambers with her and feel well-positioned to pursue a career in law and utilise these skills in my future endeavours.

Jessica Wat, Barristers - Tina Jowett, Vance Hughston, John Waters

I feel that I really got the chance to see how native title law works and got a good feel for the kind of issues and problems that arise within it and worked with great role models in the industry.

Kate Martin, Barristers - Tina Jowett, Vance Hughston, John Waters

The one-on-one relationship I had with my mentor Tina Jowett made the placement a great opportunity to learn more from her and have a more personalised placement experience. Tina also exposed me to a multitude of tasks and experiences which allowed me to gain a broader understanding of not only native title and Indigenous issues but also the reality of working as a barrister.

Doing the Aurora internship has been an immensely valuable experience, which has taught me much about native title and about life as a barrister. It has given me valuable insight into how rewarding it can be to seek to achieve social justice outcomes for indigenous people through the native title system. It has also given me an acute awareness of the limitations and difficulties involved. The internship has given me much to reflect upon, and has had some bearing on my deliberations about future career path.

I feel I have gained valuable first-hand litigation experience, and have a better understanding of the native title claim process, and some of the associated challenges along the way.

Tom Abraham, Barristers - Tina Jowett, Vance Hughston, John Waters

I was fortunate to see a barrister's role in native title claims and see how the native title process operates more generally. Moreover, I learnt how significant a successful determination is for an indigenous community.

Sarah Castles, Barristers - Tina Jowett, Vance Hughston, John Waters

I have learnt so much and will value this internship for the rest of my career.

Joanna Bielby, Barristers - Tina Jowett, Vance Hughston, John Waters

I learned about different native title services and their various approaches to claims, and Tina encouraged me to think about the efficacy of these approaches. The question always was, she emphasised, whether these approaches were helping Aboriginal people.

Sarah Shin, Barristers - Tina Jowett, Vance Hughston, John Waters

I can say with confidence that this experience will shape my future career as a legal professional, providing an array of invaluable legal knowledge and practical skills.  Interning with Vance and Tina provided an insight into the interaction between clients and instructing solicitors with counsel, with their legal expertise and extensive experience providing for a rare learning opportunity. Their guidance provided an engaging introduction to native title law.

My placement has barely been time enough to scrap the surface in regard to what there is to know in native title law. Having said that, it has been long enough for it to get under my skin and notably turn into a passion.

Odette Linnane, Barristers - Tina Jowett, Vance Hughston, John Waters

I found the placement particularly useful for gaining practical skills. Actually seeing the law in action is infinitely more useful.

Alex Vanenn, Barristers - Tina Jowett, Vance Hughston, John Waters

Interning with Tina and Vance gave me great exposure to how barristers operate and prepare for court, an insight into some of the strategies they use when dealing with different clients, and an appreciation for their ability to navigate their way through the complex nature of the law of native title.

Thomas Abraham, Barristers - Tina Jowett, Vance Hughston, John Waters

I can confidently say that this was one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever undertaken. The legal skills and knowledge I gained from my time at the Chambers are invaluable and something I do not think I would ever have obtained from my studies at university.  Over a period of five weeks my understanding of the law and our legal system was entirely reassessed and re-evaluated. I learnt so much more than I ever expected, whilst developing my ability to think critically and solve legal problems. I will always value the time I spent learning about the practicalities of native title, an area of law I believe is so important and necessary for the future of our country.

Katharine Haywood, Barristers - Tina Jowett, Vance Hughston, John Waters

I appreciated that the internship experience removed the remaining illusions I had about native title and the native title legal sector. I am still interested in working in native title in the future, but have a less rose-coloured view of that ambition and am more aware of the pitfalls of working in the sector.

Daniel Noonan , Barristers - Tina Jowett, Vance Hughston, John Waters

I have learned more about native title in this short time than I have from my years of university.
