Central Desert Native Title Services:  Not Your Average Legal Service

It was a privilege to have been given an Aurora legal placement at Central Desert Native Title Services (CDNTS) in East Perth.  I spent four weeks at CDNTS in July 2018.  It was an excellent time.

It took me six years to get through my bachelor degree in Ecology, meandering through just about all departments and labs available at the University campus and delayed even further by exchange programs overseas.

I decided to study law because I was interested in doing something useful. During my studies, I saw avenues to social justice through international human rights law, community legal centres and refugee law.

The Aurora Internship Program was an incredible opportunity which cemented my passion for social justice and opened my eyes to a potential career in Indigenous Law. For five weeks over the winter holidays I interned at Central Desert Native Title Services in Perth.

There are some times that life seems like a preconceived puzzle and the pieces obligingly fall into place without much guidance. My experience with Aurora has been almost postcard perfect, and I cannot believe my luck and good timing while on placement.

The phrase ‘penultimate year’ seems to appear everywhere, for law students feeling the pressure to gain experience before graduating. Despite somehow being in my seventh year at uni (a terrifying realisation!), it felt like I’d blinked and was at the pointy, decision-making end of my studies.

When I applied to the Aurora Internship Program I did not know what acceptance would entail, or even if I would enjoy the experience- I just knew that it was something I desperately wanted to try. I had a newly found passion for social justice and human rights.

Want to get some hands-on legal experience? Potentially interested in native title or Aboriginal affairs? Then read on for my experiences as an Aurora intern and see if you’d like to apply for the next intake.

My interest in native title has been longstanding. I remember being intrigued when I learnt in High School Social Studies class that only since 1993 has Australian law formally recognised Indigenous peoples as being owners and custodians of the land.
