Winter 2017

My journey to undertake my Aurora internship with the Aurora Education Foundation (AEF) in Sydney was a whirlwind adventure. Within a few days of completing my last assignment of my undergraduate degree, I had packed up the car and was leaving Melbourne winter behind. When I arrived in Sydney, I was not disappointed, the days were beautiful and sunny and the city was lit up by the Vivid festival by night.

My work at the AEF largely revolved around the Aurora Indigenous Scholars International Study Tour. My job was to read and compile information on the scholarship applicants who applied for the five-week study tour. The tour offers Indigenous university students and graduates the opportunity to visit major universities in the UK and America. It aims at informing and encouraging these students and graduates to undertake postgraduate education at some of the most prestigious universities in the world. I was lucky to be involved for a large portion of the study tour process and in my third week we interviewed the applicants over Skype. It was an exciting process to be a part of, I can also say that my knowledge of Excel has largely improved! Another, aspect of my internship was doing research for the AEF Fundraising team. I enjoyed doing the research tasks, as it allowed me to gain a broader insight on where the AEF sits in a national and global context.

My time with the AEF was an amazing experience, largely due to the wonderful people I worked with in the office. Everyone was welcoming and friendly and I always felt encouraged and supported to use my own initiative and to use my own individual voice while completing tasks. The AEF is a worthwhile foundation running some amazing and innovative initiatives in the realm of education. The value they place on supporting, encouraging and making higher education opportunities a possibility for so many Indigenous students and graduates was evident. The AEF are a wonderful foundation to gain work experience with, I would most definitely encourage anyone thinking of interning to apply!!!
