Summer 2018

My four weeks spent as an Aurora Commonwealth funded intern at Taree Christian College gave me insightful experiences and knowledge about my future career pathway. I had the honour of working alongside Michael Saunders, the Aboriginal Resource Teacher, and Gilly Wright, a year 2 Teacher. My experience with Michael and Gilly was incredible, I was able to understand and learn so much from them. They both shared many resources, guidance, and helped me to understand the many roles a teacher has, including those roles that university does not teach you.

I built close relationships with the students and felt welcome at Taree Christian College. The duties I completed varied day to day! I observed and assisted with teaching, developed a program plan to support the Aboriginal students academically, personally and socially, and developed my knowledge of Aboriginal dreamtime stories, Aboriginal history and Aboriginal study outcomes.

On my last day of placement, the students I had been closely working with each made me a painting and card sharing their beautiful stories and thoughts of the time we spent together, and I received some lovely photos of me working in the classroom with them. I was farewelled with lots of love, support and cuddles! I feel blessed and grateful to have had this opportunity. It has only made my passion to work in this field stronger, and I am excited to see where the future will take me.

Applications for the summer 2018/19 round are currently open and will close at 5pm on Friday the 31st of August at http://auroraproject.com.au/about-applying-internship
