Summer 2019

Through the Aurora Internship Program I was placed with Indigenous Management Group (IMG) in their Perth office. I was placed there for a period of six weeks, through January and February of 2019. IMG is a consultancy specialising in Aboriginal business growth and development. They have Indigenous clients from a wide variety of areas in WA, working with both individual Aboriginal businesses as well as interfacing with various Native Title Groups as a whole.

I undertook this internship as I entered the final year of a combine Bachelor of Laws/Bachelor of Creative Intelligence and Innovation for a number of reasons. Primarily, it was undertaken as an academic requirement as my studies in Creative Intelligence and Innovation require a number of hours of practical industry experience. More pertinently however, my choice to do this experience at Indigenous Management Group specifically stemmed from a desire to undertake work in the Indigenous sector, giving back to a community which has assisted me greatly in my studies.

My time as an intern at IMG was excellent, with the scope of work required by the organisation meaning that I was able to undertake a wide variety of tasks. During my placement I was able to develop a communications framework for internal use, assist in the writing of business plans and grant application submissions, undertake marketing and social media activities and sit in on public workshops and a variety of meetings surrounding accounting, business management systems and a variety of other topics. The breath of this experience was invaluable in returning to my studies in Creative Intelligence and Innovation, as I was able to apply a number of these skills immediately, as well as continue to develop them.

Throughout my placement at IMG I was able to work closely with directors Judd Harris and Matthew Stevens, and both offered their expertise and guidance as required. The work environment was extremely open and inclusive and I was made to feel a part of the organisation immediately. I found the work at IMG to be an interesting and rewarding experience and would highly recommend those planning on undertaking an Aurora internship to strongly consider it as one of their top preferences as I believe it offers an unparalleled practical experience.
